Chalmers Wines has been a pioneer of Italian grape varieties in Australia, especially in warm-climate Heathcote. Their philosophy centers on sustainability and matching Mediterranean grapes to Australian conditions, with Vermentino becoming one of their flagship successes.
The Montevecchio range is intentionally casual and everyday-focused, inspired by easy-drinking Italian table wines. The Bianco is a field blend, often 5–7 Italian varieties like vermentino, ribolla gialla, pecorino, and others, co-fermented to create a unified, expressive wine rather than a varietal showcase.
The 2022 vintage leans into freshness and vibrancy: think citrus zest, apple, pear, and light stone fruit, with subtle florals and a slightly nutty, savory edge. It’s fermented and aged in stainless steel with native yeasts, keeping the profile bright while adding a bit of textural interest from lees aging.
In the glass, it’s crisp but not thin—there’s a gentle phenolic grip and a touch of bitterness that gives it structure. The overall vibe is uncomplicated but characterful: a versatile, food-friendly white with just enough complexity to stay interesting.
