Reed Knife Edge Shiraz 2022 comes from the Adelaide Hills project of Alex and Emma Reed, a small producer focused on cool climate sites and a restrained approach to Australian wine. Working with organically farmed vineyards across the hills, the Reeds aim to produce wines that emphasize freshness, structure, and vineyard character rather than the heavier style historically associated with Australian shiraz.
The Knife Edge bottling is sourced from elevated vineyards where cooler nighttime temperatures help preserve acidity and extend the growing season. The combination of altitude and rocky soils shapes a more linear and tightly framed expression of shiraz, with less emphasis on richness and more on tension and savory detail.
Winemaking is intentionally low intervention. Fruit is hand harvested and fermented with native yeasts, typically including a portion of whole clusters to build aromatic lift and structure. Extraction is gentle, and aging takes place in older oak barrels to soften the wine without contributing strong wood influence. The overall approach is aimed at transparency and balance rather than concentration.
The 2022 vintage reflects that philosophy clearly. The wine leans toward pepper, dark berry fruit, and subtle herbal notes, supported by fine tannins and bright acidity rather than weight or ripeness.
A focused, cool climate expression of shiraz that highlights the Adelaide Hills through a lighter handed and site driven approach.
