Christian Tschida Himmel auf Erden II Maischevergoren 2022 comes from the Burgenland project of Christian Tschida, one of Austria’s most distinctive low intervention winemakers. Working near Lake Neusiedl, Tschida farms old vineyards with a strong focus on biodiversity, manual farming, and minimal cellar manipulation. His wines are produced in very small quantities and tend to prioritize texture, energy, and site expression over precision in a conventional sense.

“Himmel auf Erden,” meaning “Heaven on Earth,” is one of Tschida’s longstanding cuvées, while the “Maischevergoren” designation refers to extended skin fermentation. The wine is built primarily from aromatic white varieties grown on limestone and gravel influenced soils, with spontaneous fermentation carried out using indigenous yeasts. Rather than pressing the fruit immediately, the juice remains on the skins for an extended period, giving the wine its deeper color, gentle tannic structure, and layered savory character.

The cellar approach is intentionally hands off. Fermentation and aging take place in large neutral vessels with minimal sulfur and no attempt to shape the wine through oak flavor or technical correction. Tschida’s goal is not oxidation or overt natural wine character, but a more transparent and textured expression of the vineyard through skin contact and slow élevage.

The 2022 vintage leans toward dried citrus, herbs, tea, and stone fruit, carried by fine grip and steady acidity rather than weight. The structure remains composed and lifted, reflecting Tschida’s restrained approach within the skin fermented category.

A quietly complex and site driven wine from one of Austria’s defining natural leaning producers, balancing texture and openness with precision and restraint.
