A true Napa classic from Ric Forman, one of the region’s most respected traditionalists. After early work at Stony Hill Vineyard and Sterling Vineyards, Forman founded his own estate in 1983 on Howell Mountain, with a focus on long lived, classically structured wines. His philosophy has remained consistent for decades: restrained ripeness, balanced alcohol, and winemaking that favors patience over intervention.
The 2019 cabernet sauvignon reflects that ethos. Fruit is sourced primarily from estate vineyards, with fermentation carried out in small lots to preserve detail and site expression. The wine is aged for an extended period in barrel, typically around 20 to 22 months in primarily neutral French oak, allowing the structure to integrate slowly without overt oak influence. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered, a hallmark of Forman’s minimal intervention approach.
The result is a cabernet that leans more old school Napa than modern power, with lifted aromatics of blackcurrant, red plum, cedar, and dried herbs, alongside subtle graphite and earth. The palate is medium to full bodied with firm but refined tannins, bright acidity, and a long, composed finish that emphasizes precision over weight.
A quietly powerful wine built for aging, though already showing elegance and balance. Ideal with classic pairings like roast lamb, grilled steak, or dishes with earthy depth.
