Domaine La Montagnette Côtes du Rhône Villages Signargues 2023 comes from the Signargues appellation in the southern Rhône, one of the few Côtes du Rhône Villages zones permitted to place its village name prominently on the label. The estate is farmed by Jean-Marie Granier, whose vineyards sit on clay rich soils mixed with the rounded stones of the ancient Rhône riverbed. Granier is committed to organic farming, traditional bush vine training, manual harvesting, and low intervention cellar practices, producing wines that emphasize concentration, character, and a strong sense of place.
The 2023 vintage is a classic southern Rhône blend of 50% grenache, 30% syrah, and 20% mourvèdre. The warm Mediterranean climate and naturally low yielding vineyards produce ripe, concentrated fruit, while the clay soils help retain freshness and structure. Grenache provides generosity and red fruit, syrah adds spice and savory depth, and mourvèdre contributes tannin and age worthy structure.
Fermentation lasts three to four weeks at controlled temperatures to preserve fruit purity and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged for six to eight months in tank before being bottled unfined and unfiltered, allowing it to retain texture and personality. The estate's minimal intervention approach avoids excessive manipulation, resulting in a wine that feels authentic and expressive rather than polished or heavily oaked.
In the glass, the wine offers notes of blackberry, black plum, dark cherry, baking spice, licorice, and hints of graphite and smoke. Full flavored yet balanced, it combines ripe fruit with savory complexity and firm but refined tannins. While approachable now with a little air, it has the structure to develop over the next several years. It pairs especially well with grilled lamb, roasted meats, stews, and other hearty fare.
