Domaine Berry-Althoff is a young family estate in the Gard founded by Elsa Berry and Clément Althoff, whose backgrounds span both the Languedoc and Burgundy. Since establishing the domaine in 2015, they have become one of southern France's most exciting producers, crafting vibrant, low intervention wines that combine Mediterranean generosity with freshness and precision. Their labels, illustrated by artist Agathe Mariposa, reflect the creativity and individuality that define the estate.
The estate is farmed organically and biodynamically with Demeter certification, placing biodiversity and healthy soils at the center of every decision. Grapes are harvested by hand, fermentations rely exclusively on indigenous yeasts, and sulfur additions are exceptionally low. While much of the fruit comes from their own vineyards, Berry-Althoff also collaborates with a handful of like minded organic growers whose farming philosophy mirrors their own, allowing them to explore exceptional sites beyond the Gard.
Garmatcha 2021 is made from 100 percent grenache grown on decomposed granite soils at over 400 meters of elevation in Montalba le Château in the Pyrénées Orientales. The fruit comes from organically farmed vineyards tended by Antoine Latipau of Domaine de l'Encantade as part of Berry Althoff's Le Quai à Raisins project. After hand harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and macerated for about 16 days before fermenting with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for 12 months in 400 liter French oak barrels followed by four months in stainless steel, with total sulfur below 10 milligrams per liter.
The 2021 vintage is a beautifully structured expression of grenache that balances concentration with remarkable freshness. Aromas of elderflower and graphite lead into vibrant flavors of red currant, ripe cherry, and crushed stone. The palate is energetic and mineral driven, with fine tannins, savory spice, and a long, elegant finish that promises excellent aging potential. It is equally compelling with grilled lamb, roasted vegetables, hearty stews, or simply shared over a long dinner with friends.
