La Ferme du Mont was created by Stéphane Vedeau, who moved from the Languedoc to the Rhône in the early 2000s and gradually built an estate focused on higher elevation vineyards and freshness rather than sheer ripeness. The domaine is based in Valréas in the northern part of the Southern Rhône and is farmed organically. Vedeau’s style tends toward polished, fruit driven wines with relatively gentle extraction and an emphasis on preserving acidity.
Première Côte 2023 is a blend of 60% grenache, 30% syrah and 10% mourvèdre from 50-year old vines. The wine is fermented and raised without an emphasis on oak, spending roughly 12 months in concrete and small portion in older Burgundian oak barrels. That neutral élevage keeps the focus on ripe fruit, garrigue and spice while allowing the tannins to soften without adding wood flavor. The overall style is generous but restrained, with the freshness of the vintage and site balancing the natural richness of the Southern Rhône varieties.
The wine shows blackberry, wild red berries and sour cherry with black olive, white pepper and dried herbs. The palate is smooth and juicy, with silky tannins, well integrated acidity and a savory, stony finish. It is approachable now but has enough structure to hold for several years.
