Massimiliano Calabretta is part of the new wave of Etna producers working with old vineyards and traditional methods while still keeping a distinctly personal style. Based on the northern slopes of Mount Etna near Randazzo, the Calabretta family has farmed vines for generations, though the estate only began bottling seriously under Massimiliano’s direction in the late 1990s. The wines have become especially respected for their transparency, long aging, and refusal to chase modern polish. Even the rosato bottlings carry the earthy, volcanic character that defines Etna at its best. Community discussion around the wines often highlights how much depth and character they deliver relative to their price point.
Terre Siciliane Rosato 2025 is built primarily from nerello mascalese grown on Etna’s lava rich volcanic soils, with fruit sourced from old bush trained vineyards at elevation. Unlike many simple Mediterranean rosés, this wine is shaped as much by mineral structure and savory detail as by fruit. The altitude and dramatic day night temperature swings on Etna preserve freshness naturally, giving the wine tension and lift even in warmer vintages.
The winemaking stays very traditional and restrained. The fruit is hand harvested, gently pressed after a short period of skin contact, and fermented with native yeast in stainless steel. Aging continues in tank to preserve brightness and clarity, with minimal sulfur and very little manipulation before bottling. The style is deliberately unforced, allowing the volcanic character and natural acidity of nerello mascalese to remain fully visible.
The 2025 opens with wild strawberry, blood orange, sour cherry, and crushed herbs layered over smoky stone and a faint saline edge. There is more texture and structure here than in many rosés, with a lightly savory note that feels distinctly Etna. The finish is crisp, mineral, and quietly earthy, balancing bright fruit with that characteristic volcanic tension that makes the region so compelling.
