Château Le Puy Emilien 2022

Château Le Puy is one of Bordeaux's most historic family estates, with records dating back to 1610. Located on the limestone plateau of Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, the Amoreau family has farmed the property for more than four centuries, now in the fifteenth generation. Long before organic and biodynamic farming became fashionable, Le Puy rejected synthetic chemicals in favor of working in harmony with nature. Today the estate is regarded as one of the world's iconic natural wine producers, crafting elegant, terroir driven Bordeaux that stand apart from the region's more polished, heavily extracted style.

The vineyards have been farmed organically since the 1950s and biodynamically since the 1960s. Native grasses grow between the vines, all grapes are harvested by hand, and fermentations occur spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Sulfur use is exceptionally low, extraction is gentle, and the wines are aged in large oak foudres and well seasoned barrels rather than heavily toasted new oak. The result is Bordeaux of remarkable transparency, freshness, and longevity, with the limestone plateau clearly reflected in every vintage.

Emilien is the estate's flagship wine, named after the Amoreau family's ancestor Barthélemy Émilien Amoreau. The 2022 vintage is a blend of 85 percent merlot, 7 percent cabernet sauvignon, 6 percent cabernet franc, 1 percent malbec, and 1 percent carménère from the estate's oldest vineyards. Fermented with native yeasts and aged for approximately 24 months in large oak foudres and seasoned French oak barrels, the wine is bottled with minimal sulfur and without fining, preserving its purity and energy.

The 2022 vintage is generous yet remarkably poised, offering aromas of black cherry, rhubarb, pink peppercorn, violets, and warm spice. The palate is silky and energetic, balancing ripe dark fruit with vibrant acidity, chalky tannins, and a distinctive limestone driven minerality that lingers through the long, mouthwatering finish. Although approachable with decanting today, its structure and freshness promise graceful evolution for decades to come.
