Pfluger Buntsandstein Pinot Noir 2023
Pflüger Buntsandstein 2023 comes from a historic family estate in Bad Dürkheim in Germany’s Pfalz region. The Pflüger family has farmed here for generations, and under Alexander Pflüger the winery became one of the pioneers of organic and later biodynamic viticulture in the region. Today the estate is Demeter certified and focuses on producing wines that reflect their vineyard origins through minimal intervention and careful farming.
The name “Buntsandstein” refers to the region’s distinctive colored sandstone soils, which play an important role in shaping the wine’s character. Fruit is sourced from several pinot noir parcels along the Haardt escarpment, where the combination of sandstone soils, moderate elevations, and the Pfalz’s relatively warm but dry climate allows for ripe fruit while maintaining freshness.
The wine is made from 100 percent pinot noir. Grapes are harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Aging takes place primarily in large, neutral wooden casks rather than new oak barrels, a choice that allows texture and complexity to develop without masking the vineyard character. The cellar approach is deliberately restrained, with minimal manipulation and a focus on transparency.
The 2023 vintage reflects the estate’s style approachable and finely structured, with red berry fruit, subtle spice, and earthy notes supported by bright acidity rather than weight. The sandstone soils contribute a gentle mineral thread that keeps the wine focused and balanced.
