Graham’s was founded in Porto in 1820 by brothers William and John Graham and became one of the defining houses of the Douro. The Symington family acquired Graham’s in 1970 and continues to run it today, drawing fruit from important estates including Quinta dos Malvedos. The house is particularly known for rich, polished Ports built around traditional Douro varieties such as touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta barroca and tinta roriz.
The 10 Year Old Tawny is not a single-vintage wine; it is a blend of Ports of different ages whose average character corresponds to roughly ten years in wood. After fortification, the wines mature in seasoned oak casks in Graham’s lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, where gradual exposure to oxygen transforms the color from deep ruby toward tawny and develops the nutty, dried-fruit character associated with the style. Regular blending is crucial, with younger and older components combined to maintain the house profile from release to release.
The wine shows dried cherry, fig and orange peel with toasted almond, walnut, caramel and gentle baking spice. The palate is rich but balanced by fresh acidity, with a smooth, silky texture and a long finish of dried fruit, nuts and subtle toffee. It is best served slightly chilled and works equally well on its own or with nuts, aged cheese and less-sweet desserts.
