Quinta de Soalheiro Alvarinho Granit 2024 comes from one of the defining producers of northern Portugal. Founded in 1974 in Monção e Melgaço, Soalheiro was among the first estates in the region to bottle alvarinho as a standalone variety rather than blending it into traditional vinho verde. The project remains family run today, with a continued focus on pushing the boundaries of what alvarinho can express across different vineyard sites.
The “Granit” bottling is drawn from high elevation vineyards around 300 to 400 meters, planted on poor granite soils. These sites are less fertile and more exposed, encouraging deeper root systems and naturally limiting vigor. The result is a different expression of alvarinho, one shaped more by structure and mineral tension than by overt fruit.
The wine is 100 percent alvarinho, hand harvested and gently pressed, with the must clarified before fermentation. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at slightly higher temperatures, a deliberate choice to temper aromatic fruit and emphasize structure. The wine then spends time on its fine lees with bâtonnage, building texture while avoiding any influence from oak.
This approach defines the style. Rather than showcasing the more aromatic, fruit forward side of alvarinho, Granit leans toward a more linear and mineral driven expression, with firm acidity and a clear sense of its granitic origin.
A focused, site specific interpretation of alvarinho that reflects Soalheiro’s long standing role in refining and redefining the grape in Portugal.
