Luís Pato is widely regarded as the pioneer of modern Bairrada and one of Portugal's most influential winemakers. A member of a family that has farmed vineyards for generations, he established his own winery in 1980 and helped revive the region's reputation by championing the native baga grape at a time when many growers were replacing it with higher yielding varieties. His work has earned him the nickname "The King of Baga," and today his wines are considered benchmarks for both tradition and innovation in Portuguese winemaking.

The estate farms a diverse collection of vineyards across Bairrada, many planted more than forty years ago on the region's distinctive limestone and clay soils. Luís Pato has long embraced sustainable farming, relying on low yields, hand harvesting, and careful vineyard management to preserve the individuality of each site. Fermentations are carried out with minimal intervention, allowing the fruit and terroir to speak clearly while maintaining freshness and purity.

Vinhas Velhas Tinto 2021 is produced primarily from old vine baga, sourced from vineyards over forty years of age. The wine is fermented in stainless steel before spending about twelve months in large used oak barrels and older French barriques, allowing the fruit to remain the focus while adding subtle texture and complexity. Luís Pato also incorporates a small amount of pressed bical skins, believing the white grape's tannins add elegance and structure to the finished wine.

The 2021 vintage is vibrant and classically Bairrada, offering aromas of blackberry, raspberry, black plum, dried herbs, and warm spice with hints of pine, black tea, and earth. The palate is medium to full bodied with lively acidity, fine grained tannins, and a long mineral finish that promises graceful aging. It is an outstanding companion to grilled lamb, roast pork, mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses, and a wonderful introduction to one of Portugal's greatest native grape varieties.
