Falkenstein Krettnacher Ober Schäfershaus Spätlese trocken “Lorenz Manni” AP18 2025 comes from Hofgut Falkenstein, the tiny Saar estate of Erich and Johannes Weber. The family farms steep, old vine vineyards in the Konzer Tälchen, working without herbicides and relying on native yeasts and traditional large format Mosel fuder. Their wines are bottled by individual cask, making each fuder a particularly direct expression of its vineyard source.
Ober Schäfershaus is a distinctive parcel within the Krettnacher Altenberg, planted to roughly 60 year old riesling vines. Unlike many of the surrounding Saar vineyards, the site contains significant amounts of diabas, a dark volcanic rock beneath the slate, which contributes to the wine’s firm, mineral character.
The grapes are hand harvested and pressed as whole clusters before the must is transferred by gravity into a traditional 1,000 liter Mosel fuder. Fermentation is spontaneous and the wine remains on its full lees in the same vessel until bottling the following spring. The old oak is not used to impart flavor; rather, it allows the wine to develop slowly while preserving the character of the vineyard.
Despite the Spätlese designation, this is completely dry, with the 2025 showing a little more roundness and yellow fruit than the particularly cool and taut 2024. The wine has impressive acidity and precision, with citrus, yellow apple, herbs, mint, and a distinctly chalky mineral character.
A beautifully traditional Saar riesling that combines old vines, an unusual volcanic site, native fermentation, and patient aging in large neutral oak.
