Alain Graillot Saint-Joseph Rouge 2021 comes from one of the northern Rhône’s most respected traditional producers. Alain Graillot established his estate in Crozes Hermitage in the 1980s and became known for a restrained, transparent style of syrah that emphasized farming, balance, and whole cluster fermentation rather than heavy extraction or new oak. Following Alain’s passing, the domaine continues under the direction of his sons, Maxime and Antoine, who have maintained the estate’s longstanding philosophy.
This bottling is sourced from hillside vineyards in Saint-Joseph, where granite soils and steep exposures shape a more linear and savory expression of syrah than is often found further south in the Rhône Valley. Farming is careful and relatively low intervention, with attention focused on preserving freshness and site character in the fruit.
The wine is made from 100 percent syrah, fermented with a meaningful portion of whole clusters and indigenous yeasts. Extraction is gentle, and aging takes place largely in older barrels rather than new oak, allowing the vineyard character and natural structure of the grape to remain central.
The 2021 vintage particularly suits Graillot’s style. A cooler and more classic year in the northern Rhône, it produced wines with moderate alcohol, firm acidity, and more tension than richness. The resulting Saint-Joseph leans toward pepper, dark fruit, olive, and subtle herbal notes, framed by fine tannins and a mineral edge from the granite soils.
A traditional and site driven expression of Saint-Joseph shaped more by restraint and vineyard character than by cellar influence.
