Alain Graillot Syrocco Zenata Syrah 2023 is a collaboration between the late Alain Graillot, one of the defining producers of Crozes Hermitage, and the Benjelloun family in Morocco’s Zenata region, just east of Casablanca. Drawn to the cooling Atlantic influence and limestone rich soils of the area, Graillot saw the potential to produce a fresher, more restrained expression of syrah in a climate not traditionally associated with fine wine.

The vineyards sit at moderate elevation with steady ocean breezes helping to temper the heat and preserve acidity. Farming is careful but straightforward, with an emphasis on healthy fruit and balanced ripeness rather than concentration. From the beginning, the project was guided by Graillot’s northern Rhône sensibility - less extraction, less oak influence, and more focus on transparency and drinkability.

The wine is made from 100 percent syrah. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with gentle extraction, followed by aging primarily in concrete and older barrels to preserve freshness and avoid masking the fruit. The approach mirrors Graillot’s broader philosophy wines built around structure and energy rather than weight.

The 2023 vintage continues in that style. The wine leans toward pepper, dark fruit, and subtle savory notes, carried by moderate tannins and lively acidity. There is ripeness from the climate, but also restraint from both site and handling.

A distinctive project that brings together Moroccan terroir and traditional Rhône inspired winemaking through a lens of balance and restraint.
