R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva 2013 comes from one of Rioja’s most traditional estates, where generations of careful vineyard work and conservative cellaring shape the house style. The Viña Tondonia vineyards sit on a mix of limestone and clay, and the family tends them with a long-term view, favoring balanced vines and modest yields.

Winemaking here is deliberate: native fermentations, long macerations for the reds, and extended aging in a mix of American and French oak before bottling. The Reserva designation means the wine spent significant time in barrel and bottle before release, allowing early structural elements to integrate and mellow.

Viña Tondonia Reserva 2013 - the blend is predominantly tempranillo, with smaller portions of garnacha, graciano, and mazuelo (carignan in France) contributing complexity and structure. The typical breakdown for this vintage is roughly 70% tempranillo, 20% garnacha, and about 5% each graciano and mazuelo.

In 2013, the result is composed rather than showy. Aromas lean toward dried cherry, cranberry, and a subtle hint of tobacco leaf, with earthier notes of cedar and forest floor gaining presence with air. The palate is poised, showing firm yet refined tannins and a thread of acidity that keeps the wine lively. Flavors of red fruit and dried herbs sit alongside gentle spice - a balance of immediacy and calm restraint.

This is a wine that reveals itself over time, suited to food but also rewarding focused tasting. It’s a straightforward expression of traditional Rioja - thoughtful, balanced, and quietly persistent.
