Chalmers Wines has been a pioneer of Italian grape varieties in Australia, especially in warm-climate Heathcote. Their philosophy centers on sustainability and matching Mediterranean grapes to Australian conditions, with vermentino becoming one of their flagship successes.
The 2023 Vermentino is a cooler-vintage expression, making it more lifted and precise than usual. It’s wild-fermented in tank to preserve freshness, with aromatics leaning toward white florals, citrus, star fruit, and a distinctive saline edge.
On the palate, it’s light to medium-bodied with zippy acidity, low alcohol, and a slightly salty, mineral texture. There’s a gentle bitterness (typical of the grape) that adds structure and food-friendliness. Overall, it’s a bright, coastal-feeling white. It is refreshing, unfussy, and very much designed for drinking young.
