R. Lopez de Heredia Gravonia Rioja Blanco Crianza 2018
R. López de Heredia is one of Rioja’s great historic houses, founded in Haro in 1877 and still run by the same family. The winery remains remarkably traditional, working only with estate vineyards, fermenting in old wooden vats, maintaining its own cooperage and releasing wines only after unusually long maturation. Gravonia comes from the Viña Zaconia vineyard near Haro, a roughly 20 hectare site overlooking the Ebro with very stony soils that force the vines to root deeply.
The 2018 is 100% viura from estate fruit. After fermentation, it spends four years in seasoned oak barrels, with the wine manually racked twice each year. It is then clarified with fresh egg whites and bottled without filtration, followed by additional bottle aging before release. The extended oxidative élevage is central to the style, building complexity and texture while the naturally firm acidity of viura keeps the wine remarkably fresh.
The wine shows preserved lemon, quince and yellow apple with chamomile, almond, beeswax and subtle savory spice. The palate is broad and layered but still lively, with bright acidity, a gently waxy texture and a long, dry finish that moves between citrus, nuts and mineral notes.
