Usonia is a small, hands-on project based in New York’s Finger Lakes, focused on cool-climate varieties and transparent winemaking. The team works closely with growers who farm thoughtfully, favoring healthy vineyards and moderate yields over heavy intervention. In the cellar, the approach is low-impact: native fermentations, minimal additions, and élevage choices that prioritize clarity over embellishment.
The Cayuga “Plane’s Block” 2024 comes from a single parcel planted to cayuga white, a hybrid variety developed in the region to handle its cold winters and short growing season. Rather than treating the grape as merely serviceable, Usonia approaches it with care, aiming to show its natural brightness and structure. Fermentation is steady and unforced, with aging that preserves freshness and texture.
The 2024 is light-bodied and crisp, with notes of pear skin, citrus, and a faint floral lift. There’s a gentle roundness through the mid-palate balanced by clean acidity and a dry finish. It’s an easygoing but thoughtfully made wine that highlights both the adaptability of cayuga and the potential of focused, site-specific farming in the Finger Lakes.
