Moric Blaufränkisch 2023 is a single-varietal expression of Austria’s signature red grape, crafted by Weingut Moric, the project led by Roland Velich in the Mittelburgenland region. Velich left his family’s winery in the early 2000s to focus squarely on blaufränkisch, driven by a belief that the cool continental climate and local soils could yield wines with clarity and structure rather than mere power.
The 2023 bottling comes from vineyards in and around Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt, planted on a mix of limestone, gravel and clay. Fruit is picked selectively and fermented with native yeasts, typically in open vats, then matured in older barrels that influence texture more than flavor. Minimal intervention in the cellar lets the grape’s natural traits show without heavy manipulation.
In the glass, this blaufränkisch usually shows a medium ruby colour and an aroma profile of red and dark berries, hints of spice, and a touch of savory herb. The palate tends toward a firm but balanced acidity with fine tannins and a tidy, dry finish. It isn’t flashy; it’s more about focus and tension — fruit and structural elements in balance rather than overt richness.
This is a wine designed to pair with food — grilled meats, herb-accented dishes, or rustic fare — where its freshness and detail can complement rather than overwhelm the plate. It reflects Moric’s philosophy: wines that articulate site and varietal character with clarity and restraint.
