Baricci is a tiny family estate whose identity is inseparable from Montosoli, the celebrated hill just north of Montalcino. The family farms only about five hectares, all on Montosoli, and first bottled Brunello from the site in 1971. The vineyard sits around 280 to 300 meters with east to southeast exposure, on galestro soils mixed with quartz, schist and sandstone. The vines average roughly 40 years, and harvesting is done by hand.

The 2020 is 100% sangiovese. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel for about three weeks, followed by roughly 25 days of skin maceration with regular pumpovers. The wine then spends 36 months in large 40 hectoliter Slavonian oak casks and another six months in bottle before release. The long élevage in large neutral casks keeps the emphasis on Montosoli’s combination of power, freshness and mineral tension rather than overt oak.

The 2020 shows ripe cherry and plum with violet, rose, tobacco, herbs and a distinctly stony, earthy edge. The palate is concentrated but finely structured, with vibrant acidity, polished tannins and impressive length. It has the depth of the warm vintage, but also the lift and finesse for which Montosoli is prized.
