Poderi Boscarelli was founded in 1962 when Egidio Corradi purchased two abandoned farms in Cervognano, southeast of Montepulciano in Tuscany. His daughter Paola and her husband Ippolito De Ferrari subsequently transformed the property into a working wine estate, planting vineyards and establishing the winery. Today, their sons Luca and Nicolò De Ferrari manage the domaine, continuing the family’s focus on sangiovese, locally known as prugnolo gentile. The estate produces several expressions of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, emphasizing the character of its individual vineyard sites and traditional Tuscan grape varieties.

The family has progressively replanted its historic vineyards, carefully selecting vine material suited to the estate’s varied soils. Located in Cervognano, the vineyards encompass calcareous, sandy and alluvial soils, with varying proportions of clay, silt and iron rich minerals. Planting densities average approximately 6,500 vines per hectare, encouraging competition between vines and concentrating fruit production. The Riserva draws from selected parcels with vines at least 20 years old, with grapes harvested by hand to preserve fruit quality.

The 2020 Riserva is a blend of 95% sangiovese and 5% colorino, sourced from the estate’s historic vineyards. Originally produced in the 1970s and 1980s, the Riserva was discontinued for nearly two decades while the family replanted and refined its vineyards, returning with the 2010 vintage. Grapes are hand harvested, destemmed and fermented in oak vats using indigenous yeasts, with manual punchdowns and pumpovers. The wine undergoes élevage for 28 to 32 months in large Slavonian and French oak casks, followed by at least six months of bottle aging before release. This extended maturation develops complexity while preserving the character of the sangiovese.

The wine opens with aromas of black cherry, plum and dried flowers, accompanied by notes of tobacco, eucalyptus and earthy spice. On the palate, dark berry fruit and savory herbs are supported by firm, structured tannins and lively acidity. The finish is long and layered, with hints of dark chocolate, leather and lingering mineral notes.
