Gurrieri is a small family estate located in the countryside around Chiaramonte Gulfi in southeastern Sicily, within the historic Val di Noto area and the broader Vittoria wine region. The estate was founded by Vincenzo Gurrieri and Graziella Battaglia, with their children now involved in the family operation. What began as traditional farming for family consumption gradually developed into a boutique winery focused on expressing the character of the Hyblaean Mountains. Today the estate works primarily with native Sicilian grapes including frappato, nero d’avola, grillo, and moscato, with a strong focus on preserving the identity of the Vittoria landscape.
Gurrieri farms organically, with certification through ICEA, and follows a low intervention approach in the vineyard. The estate avoids herbicides, synthetic chemicals, and genetically modified products, instead relying on practices such as green manure, organic fertilization, manual soil management, and careful canopy and cluster management. Their vineyards are spread across several parcels between Chiaramonte Gulfi, Mazzarrone, and Comiso, sitting at roughly 260 to 300 meters above sea level. The combination of calcareous clay soils, Mediterranean breezes, and significant day to night temperature swings helps preserve acidity and aromatic intensity in the wines.
The Gurrieri Frappato Vittoria 2025 is a pure expression of frappato, one of Sicily’s most distinctive indigenous grapes. Unlike many heavier Sicilian reds, frappato is prized for its perfume, freshness, and elegance rather than power. Expect aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry, red cherry, rose petals, violet, and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it is light to medium bodied with bright acidity, silky tannins, and a subtle savory character that reflects the limestone influenced soils of Vittoria.
This is a style of wine that sits beautifully between traditional red and natural wine worlds. It has the freshness and low tannin profile that make frappato so appealing, but Gurrieri’s organic farming and careful cellar approach keep the wine clean, precise, and approachable rather than overtly funky. It is an ideal chilled red for warmer weather and pairs wonderfully with charcuterie, grilled fish, pizza, tomato based dishes, roasted vegetables, and lighter pasta dishes. For Flight Wine Shop customers, this would be a great introduction to Sicilian indigenous grapes and a strong alternative to pinot noir or lighter gamay styles.
