Pecchenino is one of the most respected family estates in Piedmont, with roots in Dogliani dating back to the late nineteenth century. Today the winery is led by brothers Orlando and Attilio Pecchenino, the fourth generation of the family, who have helped establish the estate as one of the benchmark producers of both dolcetto and barolo. While many Langhe producers focus primarily on nebbiolo, Pecchenino has remained deeply committed to dolcetto, believing the hills of Dogliani are among the finest places in the world for the variety.
The family farms approximately 35 hectares of vineyards across Dogliani, Monforte d'Alba, and Bossolasco using environmentally conscious practices that prioritize healthy soils and long term sustainability. Vineyard work is done with meticulous attention to each site, with naturally controlled yields, hand harvesting, and careful canopy management. The estate follows eco friendly farming practices and has earned sustainability certification through Valoritalia, while the cellar relies on gentle handling to preserve the purity of the fruit.
San Luigi is Pecchenino's flagship Dogliani and has been produced since 1994. Made from 100 percent dolcetto, the wine comes from several vineyards surrounding the family's winery within the San Luigi cru. The vines grow on calcareous clay soils with southeastern, southern, and southwestern exposures that encourage full ripening while maintaining freshness. Fermentation takes place entirely in stainless steel, followed by natural malolactic fermentation and aging exclusively in stainless steel to preserve the grape's vibrant fruit character and mineral expression.
The 2022 vintage is fresh, vibrant, and wonderfully expressive, offering aromas of blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, and red cherry with subtle mineral notes. Medium bodied with soft tannins, bright acidity, and exceptional balance, it captures everything that makes Dogliani one of Italy's great homes for dolcetto. It is equally at home alongside pizza, pasta, grilled meats, and aged cheeses, making it one of Piedmont's most versatile and satisfying everyday wines.
