Ellsworth Home Vineyard Red 2024 is made by Ellsworth Wines, a small family estate in California's Sierra Foothills founded by Jeffrey and Bryn Ellsworth. After taking over the Penn Valley property in 2020, the couple committed to organic farming, regenerative vineyard practices, and low intervention winemaking. Produced in tiny quantities, their wines have quickly developed a reputation for freshness, balance, and expressing the unique character of the Sierra Foothills.
The 2024 Home Vineyard Red is a blend of whole cluster fermented merlot and cabernet franc cofermented with direct pressed syrah from the estate's north facing vineyard at 1,500 feet of elevation. The vineyard, planted in 2002 on granite based, iron rich red clay soils, benefits from warm days and cool evenings that preserve both ripeness and natural acidity. The whole cluster fermentation contributes lift, spice, and fine tannins, while the direct pressed syrah brings brightness and aromatic complexity rather than weight.
The wine is fermented with native yeasts and aged in neutral French oak before bottling unfined and unfiltered. The minimalist approach allows the vineyard to take center stage, resulting in a wine that is energetic, transparent, and remarkably food friendly.
The 2024 offers aromas of black cherry, red plum, blackberry, violets, cracked pepper, and fresh herbs. Medium bodied and vibrant, it combines juicy fruit with savory notes, silky tannins, and lively acidity, finishing with a subtle mineral edge. Elegant rather than powerful, it is a versatile red that pairs beautifully with roast chicken, grilled pork, lamb, charcuterie, and a wide range of seasonal dishes.
