John Duval Entity Shiraz 2021 comes from the Barossa Valley project founded by John Duval, one of Australia’s most respected shiraz specialists. Duval spent nearly three decades at Penfolds, where he served as chief winemaker and helped shape the house’s most iconic wines before establishing his own small winery in 2003. His personal label focuses on carefully sourced fruit from long-trusted growers across the Barossa, with the aim of producing wines that show depth while retaining balance and structure.
Entity is Duval’s core shiraz bottling and reflects his long experience working with the variety. The wine is sourced from a collection of mature vineyards across Barossa Valley and the cooler Eden Valley, bringing together the richer fruit of Barossa with the lift and acidity that Eden Valley sites can provide. In the 2021 vintage, roughly three-quarters of the fruit came from Barossa Valley and about a quarter from Eden Valley.
The fruit is hand-harvested and fermented in small stainless-steel fermenters, with each vineyard parcel handled separately. Extraction is kept measured through techniques such as submerged caps and gentle pump-overs. After fermentation, the components are aged for about 15 months in French oak hogsheads, with a portion of new barrels alongside older wood, allowing structure to develop without overwhelming the fruit.
The 2021 vintage in Barossa saw a long, even growing season that allowed the grapes to ripen steadily while retaining freshness. The resulting wine shows the classic regional profile of dark fruit, spice, and subtle floral lift, supported by firm but polished tannins and a balanced structure.
Entity represents Duval’s view of Barossa shiraz at its most complete — fruit drawn from multiple trusted sites, handled with restraint, and built to show both approachability and aging potential.
