Keermont is one of the most respected small estates in Stellenbosch, founded by the Wraith family in the naturally formed amphitheater between the Helderberg and Stellenbosch mountain ranges. The vineyards sit high in the Blaauwklippen Valley, surrounded by indigenous fynbos vegetation and planted on steep slopes of sandstone, granite, and deep red clay soils. Since the early 2000s, Keermont has developed a reputation for wines that combine the structure and age worthiness associated with Stellenbosch with a more restrained, site driven sensibility. Their cabernet sauvignon in particular has become one of the benchmarks for the region’s more classical style.
The 2021 comes primarily from the Cottage Lane Vineyard, planted on an exposed ridge around 320 meters above sea level on the Helderberg side of the estate. The combination of elevation, wind exposure, and clay rich soils naturally produces small berries and low yields, giving the wine concentration without sacrificing freshness. While the wine is overwhelmingly cabernet sauvignon, a small amount of cabernet franc is blended in to add aromatic lift and additional complexity to the tannin structure.
Winemaking at Keermont remains deeply traditional and gentle. The fruit is hand harvested in small lots and fermented separately with indigenous yeast in open top fermenters. Extraction is careful rather than aggressive, preserving the wine’s fine grained structure and herbal detail. The 2021 spent 21 months in seasoned French oak barriques before being bottled by hand without filtration, followed by extended bottle aging at the estate prior to release. The élevage gives the wine polish and depth while keeping oak influence firmly in the background.
The 2021 shows cassis, blackberry, mulberry, and dark plum layered with graphite, cedar, dried herbs, and subtle cocoa spice. There is a distinctly Stellenbosch character here, combining ripe fruit with earthy tension and savory freshness rather than overt sweetness or heaviness. The tannins are firm but finely textured, carried by bright natural acidity into a long, focused finish that feels built more for evolution than immediate richness.
