Land of Saints is the collaborative project of Angela Osborne of A Tribute to Grace and Jason Osborne of Lieu Dit, two winemakers deeply tied to Santa Barbara County’s more restrained, vineyard driven side of California wine. The label was created as a way to produce approachable but thoughtful wines that still reflect the coastal energy and farming of the region. Rather than chasing heavily extracted or overly polished styles, Land of Saints focuses on freshness, moderate alcohol, and transparency to site, drawing heavily from Rhône and Mediterranean influences.
The Santa Ynez Merlot 2022 comes from cooler pockets of Santa Ynez Valley where merlot can ripen slowly while still retaining acidity and herbal lift. This is not built in the plush, oak driven California merlot mold. Instead, the wine leans into the grape’s more savory and structured side, emphasizing red and black fruit, earth, and freshness over softness or sweetness. The fruit is sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards selected for balance rather than sheer ripeness.
In the cellar, the approach is intentionally hands off. The fruit is fermented with native yeast and sees gentle extraction to preserve aromatics and avoid heaviness. Aging takes place largely in neutral oak, allowing texture to develop without layering on strong wood influence. The overall style stays lifted and energetic, consistent with the broader Land of Saints philosophy of making California wines that feel vibrant and easy to return to.
The 2022 shows black cherry, plum, raspberry, and dried herbs layered with subtle cocoa, bay leaf, and a faint dusty earthiness. There is enough structure to give the wine shape, but the tannins stay soft and fine grained rather than dense. The finish carries a savory freshness that makes the wine feel far more coastal and food friendly than many modern expressions of merlot.
