Poderi e Cantine Oddero is one of the historic family estates of Barolo, with winemaking roots in La Morra dating to the late 18th century. The family began bottling wine under its own name in 1878, while Giacomo Oddero modernized and expanded the estate during the 1950s. Today, the winery is managed by his daughter Mariacristina and the seventh generation, Isabella and Pietro, who continue the family’s commitment to traditional winemaking. The estate farms approximately 35 hectares across the Langhe and Asti regions, including several celebrated Barolo vineyard sites.

Oddero began adopting organic farming practices in 2008, and its nebbiolo, barbera and dolcetto vineyards are now certified organic. The family avoids chemical herbicides, using mechanical weed control, natural ground cover and organic fertilizers to maintain soil health. The Villero vineyard lies in Castiglione Falletto, just a short distance from Rocche di Castiglione, but its compact, clay and limestone rich soils produce a distinctly different expression of nebbiolo. The greater clay content helps retain moisture and contributes to the wine’s depth, rounded texture and generous fruit character.

The 2021 Barolo Villero is made entirely from nebbiolo, sourced from a small, approximately 0.8 hectare parcel of mature vines in Castiglione Falletto. Grapes are harvested and selected by hand before gentle destemming and fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine undergoes extended maceration followed by élevage in large oak casks, preserving the character of the fruit without pronounced new oak flavors. The estate’s technical specifications describe 30 months in 4,000 liter oak casks followed by approximately one year of bottle aging, although a vintage specific account reports 24 months in cask for the 2021 release. This single vineyard bottling emphasizes Villero’s naturally generous fruit, structured tannins and considerable aging potential.

The 2021 vintage opens with aromas of dark cherry, wild strawberry and violet, accompanied by notes of licorice, balsamic herbs and earthy spice. On the palate, concentrated red and dark fruit is supported by vibrant acidity and firm, finely textured tannins. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of cocoa, dried flowers and savory spice, suggesting excellent potential for further bottle aging.
