Trebbiano Spoletino is a rare gem found exclusively in and around Montefalco. The origins of this grape—whether it was native to the region or brought there—remain a mystery. In the vineyard, it displays the typical characteristics of its family: resilience, late ripening, and naturally high acidity. However, it distinguishes itself from other Trebbiano varieties, which are often watery and bland, through its depth and complexity.
Francesco Mariani brings out the best in Trebbiano Spoletino. Following strict organic practices, he carefully hand-harvests the grapes in mid-October. The grapes undergo an eight-day maceration before fermentation, followed by aging for five months in cement tanks and an additional two months in the bottle. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Montefalco is one of the most exciting wine villages in central Italy. This is largely due to two excellent grape varieties that are grown almost exclusively within its municipal boundaries: the red Sagrantino and the white Trebbiano spoletino. Francesco Mariani from the Raìna winery, which was founded in 2001, produces an impressive range of profound, lively and full-bodied wines.
