He launched Sandlands with the 2010 vintage after years of seeking out California’s overlooked old vineyards and historic grape varieties. The common thread is ancient, often own rooted vines planted in sandy soils, with an emphasis on restrained ripeness, neutral oak and wines that reflect site rather than winemaking. Passalacqua’s experience includes work with Eben Sadie in South Africa and Alain and Maxime Graillot in the Northern Rhône before his long tenure at Turley.

The Lodi Zinfandel comes from Kirschenmann Vineyard in the Mokelumne River AVA, which Passalacqua purchased in 2012. Originally planted in 1915, the vineyard contains largely own rooted, head trained zinfandel growing in exceptionally deep sandy loam with streaks of silica and limestone. It is dry farmed, and its position near an oxbow of the Mokelumne River brings slightly cooler conditions than much of surrounding Lodi. The combination of old vines, sand and Delta influenced temperatures has historically produced a more floral, lifted expression of zinfandel rather than the region’s heavier stereotype.

The 2023 is 100% zinfandel, fully destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in neutral vessels. It undergoes élevage entirely in seasoned French oak barrels, generally three to eight years old, with no new oak, acidification or water additions. Passalacqua typically harvests earlier than is common in Lodi, seeking natural acidity and finer tannins rather than maximum ripeness. The relatively cool 2023 growing season allowed an unusually long maturation period, resulting in a deeper and more concentrated version of this wine while retaining freshness.

The 2023 shows black cherry, plum and wild berries with violet, licorice, dried herbs and subtle earthy spice. It is richer and more concentrated than many Sandlands releases, but bright acidity and fine grained, supple tannins keep the wine energetic and balanced. The finish is savory and persistent, with dark fruit, fennel and spice.
