Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay 2024 comes from one of Australia's most celebrated cool climate vineyards in Tasmania's Coal River Valley. Established in 1988 and named after the Tolpuddle Martyrs, the vineyard was purchased in 2011 by the Shaw & Smith and Hill-Smith families, who quickly transformed it into one of the Southern Hemisphere's benchmark sites for chardonnay and pinot noir. The combination of a cool maritime climate, northeast facing slopes, and silica rich sandstone soils consistently produces wines of remarkable precision and elegance.
Made from 100% chardonnay grown exclusively on the estate vineyard, the fruit is hand harvested, whole cluster pressed, and fermented in French oak. The wine spends ten months in barrel with gentle lees stirring, followed by an additional four months resting on its lees in tank before bottling. This careful élevage builds texture and complexity while preserving the vineyard's distinctive freshness and mineral character.
The 2024 vintage benefited from a long, mild growing season with well timed rainfall, producing fruit of exceptional balance and concentration. The wine offers aromas of white nectarine, citrus, grapefruit, fennel, and subtle struck match notes, supported by a chalky mineral texture and vibrant acidity. Rich yet restrained, it combines intensity with finesse, delivering a long, precise finish that has become a hallmark of Tolpuddle Chardonnay.
Widely regarded as one of the finest chardonnays produced in Australia, Tolpuddle continues to earn international acclaim for its Burgundian sensibility and Tasmanian character. The 2024 is approachable in its youth but has the structure and balance to develop beautifully over the next decade or more. It is an outstanding match for lobster, scallops, roast chicken, creamy seafood dishes, and other elegant preparations.
