Viña Sastre is one of the benchmark family estates in Ribera del Duero, founded by the Sastre family in La Horra, Burgos. Although the winery was officially established in 1992, the family's roots in the region stretch back generations through founder Severino Sastre. Today, the estate is regarded as one of the appellation's finest traditional producers, known for crafting wines that emphasize vineyard character over heavy extraction or excessive oak. Their limited production and meticulous farming have earned them a loyal following among collectors and sommeliers.
The estate farms approximately 45 hectares using organic practices, avoiding synthetic herbicides, pesticides, and mineral fertilizers. Vineyard work is carried out by hand, with low yields and a strong focus on healthy soils and balanced vines. In the cellar, winemaking remains deliberately traditional, with gentle extraction and patient aging in French and American oak, allowing the fruit and limestone rich terroir to remain at the forefront.
Viña Sastre Roble 2024 is made from 100% tempranillo, sourced primarily from the estate's younger vines, many between 15 and 30 years of age. The wine spends approximately eight months aging in a combination of French and American oak barrels, giving it added structure and complexity while preserving the freshness and vibrant fruit that define the vintage. It is designed to offer an approachable introduction to the house style while maintaining the quality standards found throughout the portfolio.
The 2024 vintage offers expressive aromas of blackberry, wild cherry, plum, violets, and subtle notes of vanilla, spice, and toasted oak. The palate is medium to full bodied with ripe fruit, polished tannins, and lively acidity that keeps the wine balanced and fresh. Rich without feeling heavy, it is an excellent match for grilled meats, roast lamb, hearty pasta dishes, and aged Manchego cheese.
