Bordeaux Right Bank
While lesser known than the Left Bank, the Right Bank of Bordeaux is known for producing rich, fruit-forward red wines primarily dominated by merlot. Located on the right side of the Dordogne River, the area includes respected appellations such as Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Unlike the Left Bank, where cabernet sauvignon is the primary grape, the Right Bank blends often feature merlot as the dominant variety, offering wines with softer tannins, lush texture, and ripe red fruit flavors. cabernet franc also plays a significant role, adding structure and complexity to the wines. The region's cooler climate and clay-rich soils are ideal for cultivating merlot, resulting in wines that are more approachable in their youth but can age gracefully for decades. Château Cheval Blanc and Château Pétrus are among the iconic estates that have contributed to the Right Bank's legendary status.
