From importer Zev Rovine:

Since antiquity, Pella in northern Greece has been synonymous with wine, celebrated as “the mother of wine, where vines abound.” From ancient mosaics of the vine-wreathed god Dionysus to Euripides’ final play The Bacchae, written and staged here, the region has long been steeped in viticultural tradition. Even the Church of Panaghia in Yannitsa, built in 1861 using wine in place of water, reflects wine’s deep cultural presence. Though phylloxera and landscape changes later pushed farmers toward other crops, the region’s knowledge and love of wine endured.

In 1985, after studying oenology in France, Thomas Ligas returned to Pella to rediscover its terroir. Working the region’s sunlit slopes and well-drained, lime-rich soils, he adopted a natural approach to viticulture that goes beyond organic farming, preserving the vineyard’s natural balance and the grape’s original character.

The estate grows Roditis, Assyrtiko, and Kydonitsa for whites, and Xinomavro and Limniona for reds, all hand-harvested from mid-August to late September. Careful vinification and minimal intervention in a modern winery allow each wine to express clarity and place. Reds mature in oak before resting in bottle, resulting in wines designed to complement the pleasure of a fine meal.

The union of Pella’s historic terroir and Ligas Estate craftsmanship is a promise of authentic, high-quality wine.
