Pilcrow Granite Lake Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 comes from a small Napa project founded by Sara and Jonah Beer, whose work centers on a more restrained, site driven expression of Napa Valley. Under the Pilcrow label, the focus is on vineyard specific wines, minimal intervention, and a return to what they describe as a more “old Napa” sensibility built on structure, balance, and longevity rather than excess.

This bottling is sourced entirely from Granite Lake Vineyard, a high elevation site on the ridgeline of Howell Mountain at just over 2,000 feet. The vineyard sits above the fog line on iron rich, volcanic soils with very low vigor, naturally limiting yields and concentrating the fruit. Farming is done without tilling, and the site’s exposure and elevation play a central role in shaping both ripeness and structure.

The wine is 100 percent cabernet sauvignon, fermented with a light touch and aged for about 22 months in French oak, with a moderate portion of new barrels. It is bottled without fining or filtration and with minimal additions, in keeping with the estate’s hands off approach. Production is very limited, with only a few hundred cases made.

The intent is not to amplify power, even from a site like Howell Mountain, but to frame it with control and clarity. The 2021 reflects that approach structured and composed, with firm tannins, steady acidity, and a profile that emphasizes site and soil over overt ripeness.

A tightly focused, vineyard specific cabernet that leans into restraint and structure, offering a more traditional lens on Napa mountain fruit.
