Angelo Negro Basarin Barbaresco 2021 comes from a long established family estate in the Roero, where the Negro family has been farming vineyards since the 1600s. Today the winery is led by Giovanni Negro and his family, and while the estate is best known for Roero and arneis, it has also built a quiet reputation for well-judged expressions of nebbiolo from across the broader Piedmont landscape.
The Basarin bottling is sourced from the Basarin cru in Neive, one of the easternmost and more structured sites in Barbaresco. The vineyards sit on calcareous marls with sandy veins at around 350 meters elevation, with southern exposure helping to fully ripen nebbiolo while maintaining definition. Farming and harvest are done by hand, with fruit selected for balance and freshness at picking.
Vinification follows a traditional approach: fermentation takes place with a long skin maceration of around two to three weeks, followed by aging for about 26 months in large Slavonian oak casks and bottle. The goal is not to imprint oak or winemaking style, but to allow structure and site to integrate slowly over time.
The 2021 vintage shows a classic Barbaresco frame: firm but measured tannin, steady acidity, and a profile that leans more toward structure and detail than generosity. It is built in the traditional mold, with an emphasis on patience in both cellar and glass.
A quietly confident expression of nebbiolo from a historic producer, shaped more by site and time than by winemaking intervention.
