De Forville is one of Barbaresco's historic family estates, founded in 1860 by Gioacchino De Forville, whose family originated in Wallonia before settling in Piedmont. From the beginning, the estate believed in the extraordinary potential of nebbiolo in Barbaresco and worked alongside early visionaries such as Domizio Cavazza to establish the region's reputation. Today, the estate remains family owned and is led by Paolo Ghisolfi, who continues to champion a classically traditional style rooted in elegance, longevity, and a profound respect for terroir.

The estate farms approximately 11 hectares across some of Barbaresco's finest vineyards, including Loreto, Ovello, and Cavanna. The vineyards sit on the calcareous marl soils that define the Langhe, where warm days, cool nights, and autumn fog allow nebbiolo to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and structure. Vineyard work focuses on preserving the natural character of the fruit, and the cellar follows a firmly traditional philosophy, favoring long macerations and aging in large Slavonian oak casks rather than small new barrels.

The Barbaresco 2022 is the estate's flagship wine, produced from 100 percent nebbiolo grown across several vineyards in the commune of Barbaresco, including Rabajà, Pozzo, Loreto, Ovello, and Cavanna. The average vine age is approximately 35 years. Following about two weeks of fermentation in stainless steel, the wine is transferred to large oak botti where it matures for at least 18 months before additional bottle aging. This traditional approach preserves the perfume, structure, and age worthy character that have long defined the estate's wines.

The 2022 vintage is already expressive while remaining unmistakably youthful. Aromas of rose petals, red cherry, wild berries, sweet tobacco, truffle, dried herbs, and tar lead into a palate with vibrant acidity, finely woven tannins, and classic notes of earth and leather. The finish is long, savory, and mineral driven, capturing the finesse and elegance that make traditional Barbaresco one of Italy's most compelling wines. It is approachable with a decant today but will continue to reward patience over the next decade or more.
