Weingut Dönnhoff is one of the Nahe’s most respected producers, with a winemaking history in Oberhausen dating back to 1750. The estate was brought to prominence by Helmut Dönnhoff, who began expanding the family’s vineyards in the 1970s, and today his son Cornelius Dönnhoff is responsible for the wines. Dönnhoff is known for an exceptionally precise style that combines ripe fruit with bright acidity, mineral character and finesse, from everyday Gutswein through some of Germany’s most celebrated dry Rieslings.

The 2025 Dönnhoff Riesling trocken is the estate’s VDP Gutswein and comes from steep vineyards around Oberhausen in the middle Nahe. The vineyards are planted in the region’s remarkably varied geology, including volcanic rocks such as porphyry and melaphyr along with slate and quartzite. This combination of soils contributes to the cool, stony character that is so distinctive in Dönnhoff’s wines. The 2025 is 11.5% alcohol and is deliberately made as a dry, highly drinkable expression of the estate’s house style.

Dönnhoff’s approach in the cellar is restrained and focused on preserving the clarity of the fruit and the character of the vineyards. The 2025 is fermented and matured in stainless steel and large oak vessels, with the large, seasoned wood adding texture and complexity without making the wine taste overtly oaky. The result is a Riesling that feels both polished and remarkably transparent, with the freshness and fine acidity that are central to the Dönnhoff style.

The 2025 shows green apple, citrus zest and white peach alongside a subtle salty, stony minerality. The fruit is bright and expressive, while the acidity gives the wine energy and keeps the finish clean and refreshing. It is exactly the sort of wine that demonstrates why Dönnhoff’s Gutswein is so highly regarded: serious enough to show the precision and mineral character of the estate, but approachable and versatile enough for everyday drinking.
