Falkenstein Niedermenniger Herrenberg Kabinett trocken “Mutter Anna” AP1 2025 comes from Hofgut Falkenstein, the tiny family estate in the Saar run by Erich and Johannes Weber. The Webers are committed to an exceptionally traditional approach, farming without herbicides or artificial fertilizers and fermenting their wines with native yeasts. Their wines are bottled by individual fuder, making each one a particularly direct expression of its vineyard and parcel.
“Mutter Anna” comes from an old parcel in the Niedermenniger Herrenberg, with vines reported to be as old as 60 to 80 years. The site is unusually complex, combining iron rich grey slate with quartz, quartzite bearing sandstone, and some basalt. These soils, together with the cool Saar climate, give the wine its naturally firm acidity and mineral character.
The grapes were hand harvested and gently pressed as whole clusters before the must was allowed to settle naturally overnight. Fermentation then took place spontaneously with native yeasts in a traditional 1,000 liter fuder, where the wine remained on its lees before being bottled in spring 2026. The old oak is essentially a vessel for slow development rather than a source of oak flavor.
Despite being a Kabinett, this is completely dry, with only around 5 grams of residual sugar and 10 grams of acidity. The 2025 shows the vintage’s generous fruit while retaining the classic Falkenstein tension, with mirabelle, pear, herbs, citrus, and a distinctly stony finish.
A beautifully precise Saar riesling that combines old vines, complex slate soils, native fermentation, and traditional fuder aging in a remarkably light and energetic style.
